“Games like Pokemon Arena 2D” usually means “I want to play tonight.” The project itself cannot do that until the December 2026 public beta. I split the substitutes into real-time arenas, an auto-battler, and officially published games and community/fan projects.
I am not calling any of them the best. Each row says what you get that the beta does not currently offer, and where the link goes. I am not linking ROM sites.

Not a fighter
eggieflip’s Pokémon Arena is HTML5 auto-battle: draft 6 types from 12, bet, play a match-3 corner, and catch in a safari. The page says 700+. A 19 Jun 2026 devlog says 718. Open it if you want a collection loop. Do not open it expecting Space to dodge.
Officially published games and community projects
- Pokémon Showdown (pokemonshowdown.com) is a browser simulator. Its live online count changes, so this page does not treat a count as a stable audience metric. It is turn-based, not a pixel arena.
- Pokkén Tournament DX is a 3D fighter on Switch, released 22 Sep 2017, whose current Nintendo store page lists 21 playable fighters. The arcade original is 16 Jul 2015; the Wii U version is 18 Mar 2016. Nintendo’s store still lists the Switch game.
- Pokémon Stadium 2 is turn-based on Nintendo 64: Japan 14 Dec 2000, North America 26 Mar 2001, Europe 10 Oct 2001, 251 Pokémon. It is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It is not Arena 2D.
- Pokémon Reloaded is a long-running Spanish-language project. The project’s blog had a 1.9.3 development update on 18 Oct 2026; the game is a fan project, not a rights-holder release. I only confirmed that it is in Spanish.
I loaded Showdown’s lobby and counted the online number myself. I did not buy Pokkén or replay Stadium 2 for this page. Those dates are from Wikipedia and the Nintendo store listing, not from a session.
Skip any page that offers an “Arena 2D ROM” or a Big Kid Nation APK. The rom-hack page and the download page explain why those files are not this project.

Pokémon Showdown in the browser. For a 3D fighter published by Nintendo, Pokkén Tournament DX on Switch. Stadium 2 is the N64 arena, also on Nintendo Switch Online.
